HOW DO YOU TALK TO A PERSON

How do you talk to a person

who looks like a corpse? How

do you exchange pleasantries?

How do you say, “What a beautiful

day?”  So I say, “What a beautiful day.”

How do you say, “It looks like rain?”

So I say, “It looks like rain.” How

do you say, “It smells like fall.”

So I say, “It smells like fall.” How

do you look her in the eye, the

neighbor who looks like a corpse?

So I look her in the eye. How do

you touch her hand and say, “Take

care. See you tomorrow?” So I touch

her hand and say, “Take care. See

you tomorrow.” How do you talk

to a person who looks like death

without closing your eyes, without

exhaling the longest sigh you have

ever in your life sighed, without

crying inside so she cannot hear,

without glancing up at her husband

in the driver’s seat and not let him

hear what your eyes are saying?

So I say, “What a beautiful day.”
